Custom brass door handle pulls — specialty shapes fabricated by Brass Works

The Most Touched Element in Any Building

Door hardware is the most frequently touched element of any commercial or residential building. Every time a guest, customer, or resident interacts with a door, they feel the weight, texture, and finish of the handle — consciously or not. Custom handle pulls communicate a space's character through direct physical contact in a way that a painting on a wall never can. The quality of the grip, the warmth or coolness of the metal under the hand, the smoothness of the surface under the thumb — these are the details that register as quality.

Bat-Shaped Custom Door Pulls

One of our most memorable custom handle commissions was a set of bat-shaped door pulls for a client with a specific sporting and themed aesthetic. Custom shapes like this require full fabrication from raw stock — there is no off-the-shelf bat-shaped door pull in any distributor's catalog. We modeled the form, developed the fabrication process to achieve the aerodynamic silhouette of a baseball bat in solid metal, and produced a set of pulls that became a genuinely distinctive element of the client's environment.

This project illustrates an important capability: Brass Works can produce custom door hardware in essentially any shape that can be modeled and fabricated in metal. Animals, sports equipment, monograms, abstract geometric forms, architectural motifs, corporate logos — if you can describe or sketch the form, we can build it in brass, bronze, stainless, or nickel plate.

The Fabrication Process for Custom Pulls

Custom door pulls follow a consistent development process at Brass Works:

  1. Design consultation — We work with the client to define the form, dimensions, mounting configuration (single-sided pull, through-door handle, surface-mounted bar, etc.), and finish. A sketch or inspiration image is the typical starting point; we do not require formal shop drawings to begin the conversation.
  2. Prototyping — For complex shapes, high-quantity orders, or any commission where the physical form must be approved before production, we produce a prototype. This allows the client to evaluate the form, weight, and hand-feel before committing to the full production run.
  3. Production fabrication — We produce the approved design in the specified quantity, material, and finish. Quality inspection before delivery; each piece must meet dimensional tolerances and finish standards before leaving the shop.
  4. Installation support — We provide installation documentation and can advise on door preparation requirements. For complex or multi-door installations, we coordinate with the contractor or installer to ensure proper fit and function.

Standard Form vs. Custom Shape

Not all custom door pulls require fully original shapes. Many clients need standard architectural forms — straight pulls, D-pulls, offset pulls, curved bar pulls — in specific dimensions, materials, or finishes that aren't available from standard suppliers. We fabricate these efficiently from proven forms, allowing customization in the details (length, diameter, finish, mounting center) without the prototype cycle required for wholly original shapes.

For architectural-grade commercial and hospitality applications, custom-dimension standard forms are often the right answer: they meet code and accessibility requirements while delivering the material quality and finish precision that standard hardware cannot.

Materials & Finishes for Door Pulls

Door pulls are available in solid brass, solid bronze, solid stainless steel, and nickel plate over brass, with any of our standard or custom finishes. Material selection matters for both durability and long-term aesthetic:

  • Solid brass — Warm, workable, available in the broadest range of finishes. Develops a pleasing patina on living finishes; maintains polish on lacquered or regularly maintained surfaces.
  • Solid bronze — Darker, denser than brass. Suits traditional and historic environments; develops a distinctive patina over time.
  • Solid stainless steel — Maximum durability and corrosion resistance. Essential for exterior applications and commercial environments with rigorous cleaning regimens.
  • Nickel plate over brass — The substrate and engineering flexibility of brass with the bright, cool aesthetic of nickel. Common for polished and satin nickel finishes.
