OAK Long Bar custom brass fixtures at Fairmont Copley Plaza Boston

A Landmark Commission

The Fairmont Copley Plaza is one of Boston's grand historic hotels — a landmark of the Back Bay that has hosted guests, dignitaries, and locals for over a century. Its architectural presence defines a stretch of St. James Avenue across from Copley Square, and the standard of its interior reflects the history and expectations of a property in its class. OAK Long Bar + Kitchen is the hotel's signature dining and drinking destination: a long-established institution with the kind of accumulated character that demands materials and craftsmanship capable of living alongside the building's architectural legacy.

The Project

Brass Works was engaged to provide the metalwork package for OAK Long Bar + Kitchen's bar environment. In a hotel bar of this standing, the metal details are not decorative afterthoughts — they are structural elements of the bar's identity. The bar counter edge, the sink fixtures, the lighting hardware, and the specialty fittings all had to meet the standard set by the rest of the Fairmont Copley Plaza's interior design program and decades of accumulated character.

The metalwork brief was comprehensive: every metal element visible to a guest seated at or standing near the bar required the same level of finish quality and material integrity. This is the scale of commission that Brass Works is built for — where individual pieces are part of a coordinated metalwork program rather than isolated items.

Metalwork in a Historic Context

Working within a historic hotel environment presents specific challenges that don't arise in new construction. New metalwork must harmonize with existing elements — some of them decades or a century old — without looking either out of place or like a too-faithful replica. The goal is pieces that belong in the space: that read as part of the original vision even when they are new additions to a historic interior.

The National Park Service's Standards for Rehabilitation provide technical guidance on appropriate material and finish choices in historically significant buildings — standards that our team references when working in landmark properties. The core principle: new work should be distinguishable from original historic fabric while remaining compatible in character, scale, and material quality.

For OAK, this meant selecting materials and finishes that are consistent with the Fairmont Copley Plaza's heritage aesthetic while delivering the durability and maintenance performance required by a high-volume hotel bar operation.

Materials & Execution

The OAK Long Bar project involved multiple finish types within a single installation — a common requirement in complex bar environments where different surfaces serve different functional roles. Bar counter nosing requires a finish that withstands cleaning, abrasion, and constant contact; decorative elements can carry more delicate or lustrous finishes that don't see the same contact. Coordinating these finishes while maintaining visual coherence across the full bar environment requires experience with complex commercial installations, not just individual piece fabrication.

Every element of the metalwork program was produced on the hospitality-grade timeline that major hotel renovation and refresh projects demand — scheduled around operational needs, delivered in coordinated sequences to allow the contractor to install without extended bar closure, and inspected to ensure that each piece met the finish and dimensional tolerances specified.
